Day Four: I am determined.
Have you ever encountered something and before you even tried it you decided you couldn’t do it and walked away? What stopped you? This is what I call a mountain.
I have always been determined but at times being determined is defeating. I have faced my fair share of mountains, some I was able to conquer and some conquered me but nevertheless I did not give up. There’s one mountain that I can laugh about today but when I was standing right in front of it I cried. I bought my son a basketball goal, he wanted one really bad. I got him the best one Wal-Mart had to offer. We got it home, we took everything out, laid it out as we would need it and we proceeded in putting it together. He was excited and I was happy he finally got it. At about two hours in I knew I was in trouble. He was ten years old at the time and couldn’t offer much help. At four hours in I was crying and raising the devil, he told me don’t worry about it but I knew he wanted that basketball goal so I kept going. When the sun finally went down I pulled everything in the garage and called it a night. I was devastated. I didn’t know how I was going to put that goal together by myself.
(My son and I a few days later enjoying the basketball goal)
The next morning, after crying most of the night and praying I had some renewed strength I got back out there and worked on it some more. It would be another three hours before we could stand the goal up. You know the saying if at first you don’t succeed try again, well I had the base on wrong or I had the goal on wrong; either way something was wrong. I could have left it like that but it was a safety issue so I unhooked it and fixed it. For about a week every time I pulled in my driveway and saw that goal I felt proud. I conquered that mountain. Like I said today we laugh about it; but in that moment I wanted to give up.
Being determined is a matter of choice, you can either choose to work through what it is you are facing knowing there is a greater reward waiting or you can choose to never try or give up. I hope you would choose to try. For me my reward was seeing my son smile and seeing him become better at something that he loves to do. If there something you really want to do, something you really want to accomplish, or something that is necessary do not give up on it. You look it dead in the eye and tell it “I will not give up, I am determined to get through this!” At times it may be necessary to walk away and come back to it, but make sure you come back.
Take a minute to list those mountains you a facing, after you list them put them in sentence format. Speak to your mountains. Start the sentence with
I am determined:
• I am determined to finish my degree.
• I am determined to run this 5k.
• I am determined to make my marriage work.
Read over these as often as you need to and have faith that you will get over, around or through, whatever mountain is standing in your way.
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” -Matthew 17:20
